Starting Death Row to 'American Idol'

Smith, 27, of Ellington, is a corrections officer at the Northern Correctional Institution in Somers, works on death row.

Born in Germany with roots in West Africa, Smith is employed to successful regional competitions for his voice, using the UMass Idol contest two times and doing well within the "Connecticut Idol" contest in 2005 in August, when he won the entire factor.
